Abstract

The total amount of the nitrogen lost through ammonia volatilization was determined in a laboratory experiment on a submerged soil amended with urea. Ammonia volatilization rates as high as the 22.1% of the nitrogen added to the soil were recorded in a twenty days trial. Ammonia volatilization was related to the NH 4 + -N content, the pH, and the urease activity of the flooding water.
