Abstract

Gingival cyst of the adult (GCA) is a rare odontogenic cyst, more commonly observed in the canine and premolar regions of the mandible. GCA may clinically appear as a bluish, dome-shaped swelling on the attached gingiva and result in resorption caused by pressure in the adjacent cortical bone. A 49-year-old man presented with a bluish nodular swelling on the alveolar mucosa of the left edentulous maxilla, with a time of evolution of 2 months. After imagologic and histopathologic examination, the lesion was determined to be compatible with GCA. However, the patient was edentulous and consequently lacked the periodontium. Thus, a diagnosis of alveolar cyst of the adult (ACA) was considered. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of ACA, possibly a counterpart of GCA, but in edentulous regions.
