Abstract

The vanilloid receptor – 1 (VR1) is a polymodal (activated by capsaicin, noxious heat, protons) calcium (Ca2+) channel expressed in nociceptive dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons. These neurons can be responsible for the pain felt under a variety of conditions like neuropathic pain associated with late stages of cancer, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and diabetic neuropathy. Potent antagonist of the VR1 failed as drugs because of important side-effects like uncontrollable fever, showing that non-selective, global inhibition of the VR1 is not possible.
