Abstract

An all-optical frequency up-converter utilizing electro-absorption modulators (EAMs) based frequency-doubling optoelectronic oscillator (FD-OEO) is experimentally demonstrated. The FD-OEO based on two cascaded EAMs is utilized as a frequency-doubled photonic LO signal generator and an all-optical frequency up-converter. A 21.25 GHz optical RF signal is generated by mixing a frequency-doubled 20 GHz optical LO signal with an 1.25 GHz optical IF signal. The conversion efficiency and the phase noise characteristics of the all-optical frequency up-converter are characterized.
