Abstract
Trypanosomiasis cruzi, or Chagas' disease, occurs only in the western hemisphere; thus it has come to be known as American trypanosomiasis. This insect-transmitted protozoan infection is considered to be one of the major health problems of South America, largely because it is essentially untreatable [1]. It is particularly prevalent in Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, and Venezuela but also occurs in Central America and in the Caribbean. In 1960 the World Health Organization estimated that there were seven million infected individuals and 30 million persons at risk.
