Abstract

When the co-editor of this volume, Kurt Spielberg, asked the authors to contribute a ‘distinguished note’, his answer to our question of what he expected us to write about was: ‘whatever you like’. He also sent us samples of completed notes which were delightful, informative essays, written by authorities in the field. This turned out to be an invitation to a very exclusive party, and we struggled to find the appropriate tone. General Algebraic Modeling System (GAMS) got us this invitation. Much has been written about GAMS, and thousands of modelers around the world find it useful enough to pay our bills. Some of our personal observations and a bit of history may be of interest. I (Alex, the senior author, by age only) will therefore describe the environment in which our ideas for the GAMS system emerged, and then jump ahead to observations made by the next generations of GAMS modelers and developers (Michael).
