Abstract

In this paper, we describe the young patient who had the repeated atrial fibrillation episodes immediately after consuming the large quantities of alcoholic beverages. When the patient was shown a second time the atrial fibrillation episodes occurred, the fast drug treatment was applied and reconversion to sinus rhythm was achieved, which lasted further without treatment in the interval between consumption of alcoholic beverages. The aim of this paper is to draw attention to alcohol as a significant factor in the genesis of arrhythmias in young patients with structurally healthy heart, to promote the awareness of the public about the harmful effects of this beverage not only on the cardiovascular system but also other systems and the health, in general. Since the arrhythmia, besides alcohol, may be caused by different etiological factors (hypertension, ischemic heart disease, mitral valve disease, cardiomyopathy, hyperthyroidism, degenerative diseases as well as aging) it is necessary to hospitalize these patients, to implement appropriate diagnostic methods (ECG, Holter monitoring, echocardiographic examination) to other etiological agents and to confirm the alcoholism as a trigger of atrial fibrillation.
