Abstract

Al 2 O 3 /mullite/SiC powders were synthesized through microwave-assisted carbothermal reduction (MWCR) of kyanite. Kyanite (Al 2 O 3 .SiO 2 ), a natural aluminosilicate was mixed to carbon black to achieve a precursor blend, which was reacted in a kitchen microwave oven during 40 minutes, under an inert atmosphere. Some reactions were performed in a conventional furnace in order to compare the resulting powders. XRD and SEM results showed that Al 2 O 3 /mullite/SiC phase and particles was attained in only 40 minutes in microwave reaction. Such a product was achieved in temperature ranges about 1400 °C.
