Abstract

The AISC Seismic Design Manual provides design examples illustrating the application of the AISC Seismic Provisions and other design standards related to the seismic design of structural steel. Though this paper only addresses braced frame systems, the Seismic Design Manual , presents complete examples on the design of braced frame and moment frame systems, in both R = 3 and high-seismic applications. Generally, the examples in the Seismic Manual present the design of lateral systems to support the same simple, regular rectangular building frame (shown below). The Seismic Manual, in its introduction, contains general guidance on the basics of seismic design and the application of ASCE 7 code requirements using the Equivalent Lateral Force method. Tables have also been provided for the quick selection of seismically compact sections in various frame configurations, and for the selection of common design variables required for the application of the Seismic Provisions .
