Abstract
Total lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity and isoenzyme patterns were determined for sera, red cells, stomach content, kidney, spleen, thymus, adrenal, liver, muscle, brain, thyroid, pancreas, lung, and heart in normal bovine fetuses with crown-rump length (SRL) ranging from 22.2to 88.7 cm. A wide variety of changes in both total LDH activity and isoenzyme patterns were found to correlate with increasing CRL. The observed changes fit a model in which the LDH sub-units are independently synthesized and randomly combine with each other to form the tetrameric LDH molecule. When considered with the metabolic role of LDH, the results in general provided the basis for understanding certain aspects of the developing bovine fetus, and showed that age of the fetus is an important variable in assessing LDH activity.
