Abstract

Although one of the most important experiences reported by newcomers is being made to feel welcome and part of the team (Lundberg & Yong, 1997), new hires’ interactions with organizations during the interim period, or the time between when they accept their job offer and when they officially start work, have rarely been studied. Using three-wave data collected from 221 newly admitted PhD students from the time of their acceptance into their program until three months into their tenure as PhD students, the present study examined the effects of interim organizational socialization on newcomer adjustment and socialization outcomes after controlling for the effect of formal orientation programs. The results demonstrated that, beyond the effects of post-entry orientation programs, interim organizational socialization related to newcomer task performance and vigor, and this effect was mediated by role clarity.
