Abstract

The alimentary canal of the adult alfalfa weevil, Hypera postica (Gyllenhal), was studied over a 12-month period. Structures that make up the stomodaeum, ventriculus, and proctodaeum are similar to those of other Curculionidae. The proventriculus consists of 8 sclerotized plates; the ventriculus is anteriorally bulbous, with a tubular posterior half; and the proctodaeum has a cryptonephridial attachment for the 6 Malphighian tubes anterior to the rectum. During aestivation a reduction is noticeable in total gut dimensions and in the cytoplasm of all epithelia and musculature, reflecting a decline of ingestion during adult diapause.
