Abstract

The traditional technology for the treatment of waste sludge from sewage and other wastewater biotreatment processes prior to disposal on land involves mesophilic, anaerobic digestion. From both the public and veterinary health viewpoints such treatment processes are subject to criticism. Aerobic thermophilic processes have been proposed and, to a limited degree, introduced as either an alternative or an addition treatment. The biotechnological concepts upon which such treatment processes are based are examined and some limits in potential performance are discussed.
