Abstract
There is a limited exploration in the literature of how young people’s educational outcomes respond to unexpected events or adversities in their home environment. Given the concerns about uneven educational trajectories of young people in low-income countries, such an investigation may be valuable. We analyze Young Lives data from India to contribute to this literature. We observe that over the years youth enrollment and grade attainment decline and several of them experience adversities in the form of economic loss and death and illness of a parent. Males experience similar levels of adversities as females, but their educational outcomes are generally superior to females in their cohort. Individual fixed-effects regression results indicate male enrollment is associated negatively with death of a parent. Overall however we find limited significant associations between the adversities and educational outcomes we focus on. We conclude the paper with our study’s limitation and way forward for future research.
