Abstract
To the Editor .—Public Health Service bulletin No. FL-119 for June 1982 from the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta is entitled Adult Fluoride Therapy . It cites two recent studies that have demonstrated some dramatic results from the use of therapeutic levels of sodium fluoride in the treatment of osteoporosis and otospongiosis. Both studies demonstrated the effectiveness and safety of administering high levels of sodium fluoride to elderly populations during many years of treatment. The first study by Riggs et al 1 found increased bone mass in 37 (60%) of the 61 patients treated with sodium fluoride while their vertebral fracture rate was one seventh that of the patients who had received conventional treatment for osteoporosis without sodium fluoride. The second study by Causse et al 2 considered the immediate enzymeinhibiting effect of sodium fluoride on trypsin 3 and other cytotoxic enzymes that enter the perilymph from an active focus
