Abstract Ethylene oxide reacted with surface Si–OH of Cab–O–Sil silica to form Si–O–CH2–CH2–OH, while ethylene oxide was adsorbed on the silicon radicals of the reactive silica, and the oxygen radicals of the oxygen-treated reactive silica on which the adsorbed species polymerized to form (–CH2–O–CH2–)n.
