Abstract

Abstract The adsorption of Cu2+, Zn2+ and Pb2+ from aqueous solution by bed sediment of the river Ganges, India, was studied. The parameters controlling the adsorption viz. the solution pH, contact time, sediment dose and the effect of competing ions were studied in detail. The solution pH was found to be the most influential parameter. The presence of Cu2+ and Zn2+ hinders the uptake of Pb2+, so is the case with Zn2+ in presence of Cu2+ and Pb2+. But the presence of Zn2+ and Pb2+ enhanced the uptake of Cu2+.
