Abstract

By means of direct arterial perfusion of the isolated intact dog adrenal glands it has been found that adenosine 3′,5′-monophosphate stimulates the continuous secretion of hydrocortisone. During the period of administration of the nuclcotide, the character and magnitude of steroid secretion was comparable to that seen during perfusion of ACTH. Steroidogenesis by rat and guinea pig adrenal slices incubated with 3′,5′-monophosphate was alsostudied, and a species difference in sensitivity of response has been demonstrated. Cathechol amine secretion, studied in the dog adrenal preparation, was unaffected by perfusion of either ACTH or the nucleotide.
