Abstract

To understand the clinical ramifications of managed care and managed competition, one must first understand the history of the traditional fee-for-service system and its steady transformation in the procompetition movement. This article describes the history and operations model of managed care as well as delineating its impact on adolescent substance-abuse treatment planning and care delivery. The role of assessment, outcome, treatment planning, and treatment-matching documentation is reviewed. Finally, the ethical issues in managed care are discussed.
