Abstract

AbstractThe treatment of polyethylene film with aqueous ammonium peroxydisulfate solutions prior to adhesive bonding to aluminum has been studied. Such pretreatments resulted in the formation of adhesive joints of high strengths when bonded with a conventional epoxy adhesive. The effect on the tensile shear strength of adhesive joints of variations in the treatment time and temperature and the peroxydisulfate concentration has been examined. The use of certain catalysts for the reaction has also been studied. Tensile shear strengths at least as high as with other pretreatment methods have been obtained.
