Abstract
Background: Adherence to the low sodium diet (LSD) is difficult without continuous support from spouses or family members. Patients have reported that family members not following the LSD is a major barrier to adherence. Whether having a family member follow a LSD diet improves patient adherence has not been tested objectively. The purposes of this study were to examine the effect of family participation in the LSD on adherence and to examine whether this effect differed if the family member was a spouse.
