Abstract

This study investigates Netflix subtitling of address forms from vernacular Egyptian Arabic into English and the strategies used for subtitling them. Using the corpus manager and text analysis software, Sketch-Engine, the address forms in the Egyptian series ArD Al-NefaQ “Land of Hypocrite,” consisting of 30 episodes, are identified. Adopting Díaz Cintas and Remael (2014) taxonomy of subtitling strategies, the findings showed that the subtitlers opted for the use of two main translation strategies, namely, omission and paraphrasing. The results also showed a lack of consistency in rendering subtitles of address forms. This study concludes by recommending further studies be conducted on the subtitling of address forms in other languages and cultures.
