Abstract

A revised discriminant function based on meristic data from 184 specimens of Etheostoma nigrum and 269 specimens of E. olmstedi from in and near the zone of overlap in New York substantiates Stone's 1947 conclusion that these are valid species. A 3-point character index achieves nearly the same level of species separation. Introgression of the interrupted infraorbital canal character of E. nigrum into populations of E. olmstedi is noted.
