Abstract

Edge focusing, an efficient implementation method of continuous scale space filtering, has achieved better result in edge detection. Yet, the edge focusing algorithm smooths all edges with the filter of same scale, that generates ragged edges in the following areas: (1) area with diffuse edge, (2) texture edges. An optimal scale of edge detector is derived. With this optimal scale, the original edge focusing algorithm is modified. During the process of the revised edge focusing, if the scale of the edge detector has reached the optimal scale at any edge point, then the edge at that point will not be changed any more with a decreasing scale of the filter. The benefit of this modification is that it can avoid ragged edge and false edge points. The performance of the modified edge focusing algorithm is better than the original one. The experimental results support this conclusion. >
