Abstract

Abstract This paper gives a brief insight into the history of people of Indian origin in South Africa and their contribution to the historical, economic and political development of the country. Reference is also made to some significant changes that have taken place in South Africa over the past decade or so. It is argued, however, that in many major areas of our public life fundamental change has been conspicuously absent. None of the major laws affecting race relations in South Africa have yet been repealed. Although some of the changes that have taken place cannot be described as merely cosmetic, fundamental changes in what the majority of people in South Africa could regard as major in some important fields have not taken place and are so far not envisaged. It therefore follows that the problem of adaptation to these “changes” has barely arisen in South Africa.
