Abstract

Based on the fault characteristics of wind power system, the adaptability of traditional directional relays is analysed systematically in this paper. Firstly, the fault characteristics of wind power system are given briefly. Then the operation performance of directional relays in power systems with wind farms is analysed by the fault characteristics of wind power system. Eventually, the analysis results are verified by data from both PSCAD simulation and field fault record. The results demonstrate that impacted by the fault characteristics of weak infeed, high harmonic, frequency deviation and unstable source impedance of wind power system, directional relays based on phasor fault component and positive sequence fault component exist adaptability problem when applied in power systems with wind farms. And the negative and zero sequence based directional relays still remain good operation performance.
