Abstract

In the Kishitsu geryō zukan (竒疾外療図卷; Illustrated Book on External Treatments for Unusual Diseases), set amongst several hand-coloured medical illustrations, two pages annotated with the words “血瘤“ are seen. The first shows an older Japanese man with his hakama pants neatly rolled up, exposing a prominent plum-coloured haematoma over the medial aspect of his right thigh (image 1). A second page features a left lower limb of an adult patient with a large, below knee swelling, where a copious amount of fresh blood is seen trickling down from a puncture site (image 2).
