Abstract

The effect of K 2O substitution by Na 2O on the elastic properties and structure of the glass system 65SiO 2-15PbO-5CaO-(15- x)K 2O- xNa 2O ( x = 0, 6, 12, 15 mol%) has been investigated ultrasonically using the pulse-echo technique. The number of non-bridging oxygen atoms and the most important structural parameters such as the average stretching force constant, average cross-link density, average atomic range size, number of atoms per unit volumes and field strength of the interstitial cations have been calculated for each glass sample. The dependence of elastic properties of these glasses on their composition are discussed in terms of the above parameters to obtain quantitative details about their structure.
