Abstract

PurposeTo compare liver stiffness (LS) measurements by means of ARFI elastography in patients with HBV versus HCV chronic hepatitis, according to severity of histological fibrosis (assessed according to the Metavir score).Material & MethodsOur study included 151 patients; in 2 valid measurements could not be obtained, and in 13 ARFI measurements did not fulfill the quality criteria (IQR<30% and SR≥60%), thus finally 136 patients (90.1%) were evaluated: 48 with HBV chronic hepatitis and 88 with HCV. Liver biopsy and ARFI measurements were performed in each patient in the same session. 10 valid ARFI measurements were performed in each patient and median values were calculated, expressed in meters/second (m/s).ResultsThe mean values of LS determined by ARFI elastography (m/s), depending on the stage of fibrosis in patients with chronic hepatitis HBV versus HCV were: for F1: 1.23±0.29 versus 1.18±0.11 (p = 1); for F2: 1.4±0.32 versus 1.23±0.29 (p = 0.18); for F3: 1.6±0.49 versus 1.69±0.68 (p = 0.86) and for F4: 2.39±0.8 versus 2.47±0.70 (p = 0.49).ConclusionIn this preliminary study, there are no statistically significant differences between ARFI measurements in patients with HBV as compared to HCV chronic hepatitis, for the same histological stage of fibrosis.
