Abstract

Purpose: Physiotherapists are experts in managing patients with musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions. The international Educational Standards from the International Federation of Orthopaedic Manipulative Physical Therapists (IFOMPT) ensures the appropriate postgraduate level of clinical practice, governance and quality of care in MSK physiotherapy internationally. The fast-evolving physiotherapy scope of practice in the UK has led to the development and implementation of Advanced Clinical Practice (ACP). This study aimed to map the IFOMPT Educational Standards to the Multi-professional Framework for ACP in England and the Musculoskeletal Core Capabilities Framework for First Contact Practitioners. Further, the study evaluated physiotherapy stakeholders’ thoughts, views and perceptions about the potential accreditation of advanced practice for MSK physiotherapy in the UK and the governance procedures that are required to assure the quality of practice.
