Abstract

The antennae of Cardiochiles nigriceps Viereck parasite of Heliothis virescens (F.), is involved in host finding. The tarsi aid in orienting the parasite to the host. The ovipositor is involved in final host acceptance. The female parasite seems unable to distinguish between a parasitized and non-parasitized host for the first 5 days following parasitism. Host odour, size, shape, and movement do not appear necessary for host acceptance. The parasite does not depend upon a nutritionally suitable host or the presence of a specific factor in the haemolymph for oviposition. Host acceptance by the parasite is primarily involved with the host cuticle. Two different contact chemical stimuli are suggested as being responsible for host finding and acceptance.
