Abstract

This paper describes the present digital activities of the university and inter-university research institute in Japan. Three typical activities of the digital library system for Japanese academic fields are introduced. The first case is the electronic document delivery service called NACSIS-ELS (National Center for Science Information systems Electronic Library Service). In this service, Japanese academic journals are captured and made available to researchers through the Internet. The second case is the digital library and archive system as multimedia databases such as catalogues, images, and texts for Japanese classical literature books by the National Institute of Japanese Literature (NIJL). The last case is the new high-speed algorithm for text processing, which is called the Multiple-Hash Screening Algorithm (MHSA) by the University of Library and Information Science (ULIS). These topics are described as a summary of the papers of the digital library session which was entitled the 'Academic Digital Libraries and Contents in Japan' at the ALLC-ACH'98 conference.
