Abstract

Abstract Background: Previous studies have shown that ALDH1 expression in breast tumor cells was associated with poor prognosis.Whether tumor microenvironment affect prognosis of breast cancer patients is unknown by far. Aim: We performed a research to study whether ALDH1 expression in cytoplasm or stroma of breast tumors is associated with prognosis of breast cancer patients. Methods: As many as 160 cases with invasive carcinoma were retrieved.ALDH1 staining was respectively assessed on cytoplasmic and stroma of tumour cells.Chi-square test was used to evaluate the associations between ALDH1 expression and clinical parameters.Cox proportional hazards analysis was used for relapse-free survival(RFS). Results: There was significant association between ALDH1 expression in stroma and Age,ER. Conclusions: We conclude that ALDH1 expression in stroma might suggest the presence of Cancer stem cells in tumor microenvironment.The ALDH1 expression in cytoplasmic of breast tumors rather than in stroma was an independent factor for prognosis.
