Abstract

Objectives: As the obesity epidemic in the United States continues to grow, healthcare is challenged with providing safe, effective care for this population. Helicopter transport of obese patients offers additional challenges. Carrying capacity of vehicles and equipment, lack of adaptive tools, limited space and access to the patient, and environmental conditions all pose risks to patients and crew. A systematic review of current research yielded limited results on the care of the obese patient in emergency and critical care transport, not specific to helicopter transport. The purpose of this study was to determine if transport professionals anticipate or experience barriers to safe, effective patient care in the treatment of obese patients during helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS) transport.
