Abstract
Intra-articular glucocorticoids (IAGC) are routinely used for the localized treatment of joint pain. It is generally assumed that IAGC act only locally, but it has been shown that a single dose of intra-articular Triamcinolone can suppress the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis for as long as seven weeks. The HPA axis can take at least 3 months or longer to recover, depending on the dose and frequency of injections. IAGC administered repeatedly can eventually lead to adrenal suppression.
