Abstract

An unusual specimen of a female cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis L.) is described that was found with a large mass of black egg‐case material hanging from the funnel and mantle‐cavity. The animal was sexually mature but there were no eggs in the egg‐casing. The possibility is discussed that a failure of timing in the egg‐laying process had occurred. Associated with the egg‐case material was an actinian (Aiptasia sp.).
