Abstract

The destabilization and amorphization of crystalline matter can be achieved by a variety of different experimental methods. The energy level of the fully relaxed amorphous state to be reached can universally be normalized to a fraction of about 40% of the enthalpy of fusion or 1.4% of the cohesive energy. Thus the thermodynamics of solid state amorphization due to the incorporation of lattice defects and elastic strains related to the atomic size mismatch during alloying can be expressed by a universal equation.
