Abstract

The proposed typology would first differentiate suburban areas by functional types of use, such as truck farming, industrial and transport activities, recreation, weekend farming and summer residence, science and education, commuters' dormitory towns and service industries for the central city. Particular types of settlement patterns and types of places would be associated with each functional use or combination of uses. The various settlement types, in turn, give rise to specific forms of local systems of places within the suburban zone. Indicators characterizing the level of development of suburban functions would also be a significant aid in delimiting suburban zones. For purposes of economic planning and development, there is evident need for a revision of the Soviet Union's administrative-territorial structure so that urban agglomerations (including suburban zones) be treated as distinctive civil divisions. Several measures of suburban functions are proposed, although, in each case, data problems permit only approximations.
