Abstract
The issue opens with two obituaries mourning the passing and celebrating the lives of two great politically engaged intellectuals: Edward Said and Neal Wood. One of the first theorists of postcolonialism, Edward Said perceived this concept as a political one, to be exercised in fighting colonialism as well as analyzing it; he rejected its application as a purely discursive concept, disconnected from social and material concerns. Nahla Abdo comments on his engagement with the Palestinian cause and with oppressed Arabs and Muslims in general. She notes that resistance to authority was central to Said's intellectual, academic, and personal life, and that his position as an outsider was one of personal integrity, responsibility, and dissent in the face of imperialism and colonialism.
