Abstract

A large area thin plastic scintillation counter for studies of the heavy nuclei component of primary cosmic rays is described. The counter is based on the principle of diffuse reflection of light. Its light collection efficiency is estimated and various factors like Landau fluctuations, photoelectron statistics, non-uniformity of light collection etc. are discussed. Non-uniformity of light collection is determined experimentally and found to be about 20%. Resolution of about 35% is consistently obtained with sea level mu-mesons for cylindrical scintillators of size 16″ dia × 1 8 ″ thickness.
