Abstract

The thermodynamic concept of partial molar volume, which is used in connection with homogeneous mixtures of fluids, is applied and suitably modified for mixtures of solid particles. Specific partial volumes are calculated from experimental data for binary mixtures, and later used to approximately calculate the specific volumes of ternary mixtures. Analysis of data by this approach is helpful in understanding the contributions of particles of various sizes to the total volume of the mixture. In addition, predictive models for the volume of complex mixtures can be developed using the present approach.
