Abstract
A study of the thermodynamic behavior of ferrofluids has been carried out using both Monte Carlo simulation and the hypernetted chain approximation. Two regimes are considered, that is, in the absence of an external magnetic field and in the presence of a magnetically saturating external field. Comparison between the two methods shows good agreement. The zero-field case shows a much reduced Curie-Weiss behavior than that obtained in previous 2-dimensional simulations of a ferrofluid. The saturating field case indicates the onset of field-induced aggregation in the presence of an external field and will be an important consideration for the stability of such fluids in the practical applications
