Abstract

The results of an electronic band structure calculation for fcc Fe are used to obtain an equation of state for the inner core. Various seismic models of the inner core were used to estimate the temperature distribution and the Grüneisen parameter. The results indicate that the PEM model gives the most consistent description, with an adiabatic temperature distribution starting at 5,500 ± 500°K and a Grüneisen parameter of 1.8 ± 0.4.
