A sustainable indoor plant production management system with wireless internet access

Plants contribute greatly to life on Earth and are an essential resource for human well-being. Recent studies suggest that many exceptionally useful plants, for example rare medicinal plants, are rapidly disappearing through the destruction of their habitats. As a way of protecting such plants and optimising their growth requirements, a sustainable and intelligent indoor plant production management system is presented. The prototype utilises the necessary condition values in a data logger website with wireless internet access for smartphone applications. The innovated design was successfully tested for automatic irrigation control and sensor accuracy for optimum plant growth conditions. Further, it is demonstrated that the implemented watering techniques are well suited to ascertaining the sustainable plant irrigation with reduced water wastage.

In recent years, rapid increase in population growth, improper usage of synthetic fertilizers, organic matter depletion, nutrient imbalance, and land degradation owing to several anthropogenic activities have significantly exerted considerable pressure on agriculture which negatively influences sustainable plant production. Therefore, it is necessary to sustain the most appropriate levels of organic matter in degraded soils, which supports sustainable crop production and maintains nutrient cycling in them. Biochar has been broadly used for sustainable plant production among different organic matters due to its several advantages such as mitigating global warming, excellent soil conditioner, and as a potential amendment for various environmental applications over other soil additives. Moreover, biochar additions in agricultural soils also promoted the seed germination, growth, biomass, yield, and nutritional qualities of crops grown on biochar amended soils. In addition to these benefits, biochar also supports soil microorganisms by providing them habitat due to its porous structure and releases essential nutrients from its matrix, improving microbial communities. Plants breathing under pressure: mechanistic insights into soil compaction-induced physiological, molecular and biochemical responses in plants.

This review highlights the molecular, biochemical and physiological responses of plants under soil compaction and presents suitable strategies for optimizing soil compaction for sustainable and intelligent plant production. Soil compaction (SC) increases the mechanical impedance of agricultural crops, which restricts plant growth, root elongation, and productivity. Therefore, exploring the impacts of SC-induced alterations in plants and developing optimization strategies are crucial for sustainable agricultural production and ensuring global food security. However, the regulation of molecular, biochemical and physiological responses to SC in plants has not yet been well explored. Here, we conducted a thorough analysis of the relevant literature regarding the primary factors behind SC in agricultural soils, mechanistic insights into SC-mediated molecular and physiological alterations in plants, the impact of SC on plant productivity, and SC-minimization strategies for eco-friendly and intelligent agricultural production. The existing information suggests that plant roots sense SC-induced changes in soil properties, including decreased soil water content, hypoxia, nutrient deficiency and mechanical stimuli, through altering the expression of membrane-located ion channel- or stimulus receptor-related genes, such as MSLs, MCA1, and AHK. After signal transduction, the synthesis and transport of several plant hormones, mainly ABA, ethylene and auxin, change and restrict root deepening but promote root thickening. In addition, the changes in plant hormones in combination with decreased water availability and decreased root hydraulic conductance induced by SC affect aboveground physiological responses, such as decreasing leaf hydraulic conductance, promoting stomatal closure and inhibiting plant photosynthesis. Comprehensive physiological insights into SC in plants and SC optimization strategies could be useful to soil biologists and plant eco-physiologists seeking to improve soil management and sustainable agricultural plant production to promote global food security.

Rhizogenic agrobacteria as an innovative tool for plant breeding: current achievements and limitations.

Compact plant growth is an economically important trait for many crops. In practice, compactness is frequently obtained by applying chemical plant growth regulators. In view of sustainable and environmental-friendly plant production, the search for viable alternatives is a priority for breeders. Co-cultivation and natural transformation using rhizogenic agrobacteria result in morphological alterations which together compose the Ri phenotype. This phenotype is known to exhibit a more compact plant habit, besides other features. In this review, we highlight the use of rhizogenic agrobacteria and the Ri phenotype with regard to sustainable plant production and plant breeding. An overview of described Ri lines and current breeding applications is presented. The potential of Ri lines as pre-breeding material is discussed from both a practical and legal point of view.

The Sustainability Formula: A Human-Centred Strategy for Managing Economic Trends in the Context of ESG-Transformation

The study identifies human-centred changes in the management strategy of multi-level economic trends under the influence of ESG-transformation. The objective of the article is to find ways of strategy for building human capital and minimizing HR risks installations in the management system of the specified economic trends. The research methodology provides for a consistent macro-meso-microanalysis of the impact of the changed conditions on the basic aspects of strategic management, starting from the macro level, with the definition of qualitative and quantitative parameters of likely HR benefits/risks related to implementing of human-oriented principles of sustainable management at all levels. The result of the study is a theoretical and methodological foundation and empirical verification of the strategy for increasing human capital in the sustainable management system. It has been justified that in the face of new global challenges, the systemic algorithm for the formation of this complex strategy should provide a complete, objective and internally consistent three-level expert-econometric analysis of human-oriented macro-, meso- and micro-economic strategies for managing economic trends. Plants constantly interact with numerous of organisms and the outcome of these interactions determines plant health and growth. In other words, the phenotype of a plant is not only the result of the plant’s interaction with abiotic conditions, but also of multiple interactions in the living environment surrounding the plant, the phytobiome. In this Teaching Tool, we have focused on interactions between plants, microbes and arthropods (PMA). The organism groups that contribute to PMA interactions are presented as well as types of interactions between them, along with multiple examples of simple and more complex PMA interactions. The underlying mechanisms of plant responses are described in detail as well as the evolutionary aspects of PMA interactions. Finally, the use of PMA interactions for crop protection in sustainable plant production that supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals for 2030 is proposed.

Seasonal Evaluation and Effects of Poultry Litter-Based Organic Fertilization on Sustainable Production and Secondary Metabolism of Cuphea carthagenensis (Jacq.) J. F. Macbr

To ensure the quality and efficient access of the population to plant-derived resources, research on the sustainable cultivation of medicinal species is of great importance, and the present study aimed to evaluate the influence of poultry litter-based organic fertilization and seasonality on plant growth, soil health (quality), and secondary metabolism of Cuphea carthagenensis. Plants were cultivated during the summer and autumn/winter seasons in a randomized design with five poultry litter application rates (0, 10, 20, 30, and 40 t ha−1) and three replications per plot field (1 × 2 m). The parameters evaluated included soil health, plant biomass, nutrient content, extract yield from the aerial parts, and chemical composition. In the summer, soil bioindicators (microbial biomass carbon and basal respiration) increased with the addition of poultry litter, although plant biomass was not affected by the season. Plant nutrient levels, particularly N and P, increased under poultry litter application rates of 30 t ha−1 and higher. Under these conditions, the highest extract yield from the aerial parts was obtained at a rate of 40 t ha−1. During autumn/winter, poultry litter increased significantly soil microbial biomass carbon, plant biomass, and N and P contents, resulting in an 11.07% increase in extract yield at a rate of 20 t ha−1. Phytochemical analysis of the extracts identified 29 compounds, predominantly quercetin derivatives. Overall, the findings demonstrate that the sustainable cultivation of C. carthagenensis under organic fertilization enhances soil health, plant biomass, and extract yield. These findings highlight the potential of organic nutrient management as a promising strategy for advancing sustainable medicinal plant production and meeting societal demands for natural bioactive resources.

Perceptions of core elements for sustainability management systems (SMS)

PurposeThe concepts of sustainable development (SD) and management systems (MS) are finding increasing acceptance in a variety of fields, including academy, politics, and non‐governmental organizations. These concepts are also being used by the general population. This paper aims to describe the perception of different experts by discussing the usefulness of sustainability management systems (SMS) as holistic systems that might integrate environmental, social, and economic elements.Design/methodology/approachThis research was framed by the general systems theory and its nature is totally qualitative and exploratory in order to understand the significant attributes that affect or benefit a management system to reach sustainability. A total of 14 interviews were conducted with several experts around the world. Some are professional persons in sustainability issues in general, and some in environmental, health and safety (EHS) issues in particular.FindingsThe results shows that, although there is a continuous debate on the sustainability approach, several core elements can be addressed for sustainability management systems (SMS). For instance, 71.4 percent of the interviewees agreed that management systems are useful for sustainable development, or at least potentially useful, and 42.9 percent of the experts declared that having a clear understanding of the long‐term economic benefits for the company is an important incentive for their implementation.Research limitations/implicationsInterviews were conducted with a limited number of experts and there was no field verification of claims. Therefore, conclusions derived from these sources depend on the veracity of the information provided by participants. Expert bias may also have an impact on the outcomes of this research.Practical implicationsThe findings provide management systems' practitioners with key elements when sustainability management systems are being created, maintained and evaluated.Originality/valueThe findings are not results from general concepts, but rather elicited from empirical data from fourteen sustainability, and health and safety experts around the world.

Construction accidents on infrastructure projects in Indonesia from 2017-2021 have increased by 5.65% from previous years. Construction accidents that result in property damage, death or injury to both workers and the public, pollution and environmental damage cause sustainable development goals not to be achieved. Construction accidents are not only focused on the impacts, but it is necessary to explore how the incident occurred. This is the basis for the need to integrate quality, safety, health and sustainability in construction. The current construction safety management system is not yet integrated with other management systems. This paper aims to develop a conceptual framework in the process of integrating construction quality, safety, health and sustainability management systems. Development of a conceptual framework based on literature review, ISO standards and existing construction safety planning guidelines. The development of this conceptual framework is part of a research proposal that is being formulated to develop a process protocol for integrating process of construction quality, safety, health and sustainability management systems in infrastructure projects. This process protocol can simplify the complexity and overlapping of the processes of each management system so that it is easier to understand and to implement by all project stakeholders.

Towards sustainable plant production - carbon sequestration and soil life in arable farming: Farm level comparison between England and Finland in No-till production

Conservation Agriculture, No-till in this farm level case study, is largely adopted in dry or erosion prone conditions. The need to utilize sustainable production methods has also become a very important topic in conditions where conventional tillage and practices have been used. There are several reasons for this like: Economical pressures, environmental causes and EU regulations. To be able to learn and compare how the same common problems are solved, we have started a two dimension Farm level Case study between England and Finland. We have chosen as similar as possible conditions and farm types. Both farms are located on heavy clay soil, with relatively low annual rainfall. In both areas plow culture is still dominant and no-till considered difficult due to very heavy clay soil with low organic matter.

Theoretical Exploration of Sustainable Human Resource Management Systems: A Corporate Social Responsibility Perspective

Against the backdrop of increasingly interconnected environmental, social, and governance (ESG) challenges, enterprises must formulate sustainable strategies to achieve synergistic development among economic performance, social responsibility, and ecological conservation. As a core organizational resource, human resources serves as a critical enabler for fulfilling corporate social responsibility (CSR) and driving sustainable development. Whether enterprises can enhance the contribution of human resources to the fulfillment of corporate social responsibility and sustainable development is an important issue that currently needs to be studied in the field of human resource management. Therefore, this research follows the grounded theory method, integrates CSR and sustainable development theories, and uses systematic thinking to deeply explore the concept and structure of sustainable human resource management systems, and it develops relevant scales and combines exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis methods to revise and validate the scales. The research results show that the sustainable human resource management system is a multidimensional concept, including the following: employee rights protection, employee training and development, employee occupational health, employee relations management, and sustainable development management; its measurement scale contains five factors, with a total of 20 items. The results of factor analysis indicate that the reliability and validity tests of the developed scale have reached an ideal level. The research results enrich the concept and connotation of sustainable human resource management systems, and the development of the sustainable human resource management systems scale aims to promote the extension of the field of sustainable human resource management systems from theoretical exploration to empirical analysis research, providing a theoretical basis for Chinese enterprises to achieve sustainable development goals.
