Abstract

SynopsisThis paper examines the contribution made to society by the graduates of Marylands, a residential facility for the mildly and moderately mentally handicapped conducted by the Hospitalller Order of St John of God in Christchurch, New Zealand. The first pupil was enrolled in 1955 and the degree of participation in the community of all who have passed through the school in the last 16 years is examined—job patterns, wage levels, leisure time activities. Examined also is the question, “What could have been done to ease the transition into the broader community?”
