Abstract

Considerable research has been carried out into pressure sores and the present survey is more orientated to the development of good nursing practice utilizing existing methods than to the development of new research, although some research results are reported. In particular, the system of scoring patients to establish the degree to which they are ‘at risk’ of suffering a pressure sore has been available for many years (Norton, McLaren and ExtonSmith, 1962), although it is not universally used or even known. At the 1978 Royal College of Nursing Association of Nursing Practice annual conference, it was noted by Nancy Roper that nurses are not using research findings. The conference audience confirmed that they were not using Norton’s tool for assessing patients at risk of developing pressure sores, despite its being available since 1962. (Kratz, 1977).
