Abstract

While continuous process technology has been employed in industrial manufacturing for decades, it has only recently been applied to pharmaceutical applications. As global demand for affordable access to high-quality medications continues to rise, continuous flow and continuous process analytical technology (PAT) offer cutting-edge benefits for high-volume pharmaceutical manufacturing. Numerous examples have been extracted from industry and academia that highlight the use of continuous flow chemistry for the preparation of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and other pharmaceutically relevant transformations. Separated between catalytic and metal-free reactions, each section showcases innovations of reducing production and raw materials costs, improving safety parameters, reducing hazardous waste generation, and accessing challenging transformations using novel reactor platforms exclusive to continuous flow.
