Abstract

An expression showing the dependence of the bath oxygen concentration, (%O) b, and the oxygen concentration at the interface between the liquid steel and the wall of the solid electrolyte, (%O) i has been derived as (%O) b=A+(B/(%O) i 1 2 +(%O) i , where A and B are the characteristic quantities determined by ionic conductance and the geometric shape of the solid electrolyte and also by the condition of oxygen transfer in liquid steel. An experiment was conducted to show the influence of oxygen mass transfer in liquid steel and to demonstrate a method of determining the real oxygen concentration during EMF measurements using the solid electrolyte (ZrO 2) cell.
