  • Mar 1, 2018
  • R.P Praveen + 2 more

The energy demand of the middle east region is on the rise with an urgent need to tap the abundant renewable energy sources in the region. This is essential for the future development of the Middle-East region as it reduces the dependency on fossil fuels and eliminates the problems associated with air pollution and greenhouse gases. This paper presents the design, performance analysis and optimization of a 100 MWe parabolic trough based Concentrated Solar Power Plant with thermal energy storage for a location in Abudhabi which falls in middle east region. The thermodynamic aspect and annual performance of the proposed plant design is also analyzed using the SAM software. The annual energy generated from the CSP plant is found to be 333.15GWh with a gross to net conversion factor of 81.1%. The mean efficiency of the plant is found to be 14.35%. The performance of the proposed CSP plant is further optimized by varying the solar multiple and full load hours of TES. The proposed parabolic trough based CSP plant with thermal energy storage is found to be feasible for the location in Abudhabi and encourages further development of solar thermal power plants in the region.

IncepV3Dense: Deep Ensemble Based Average Learning Strategy for Identification of Micro-Nutrient Deficiency in Banana Crop
  • Jan 1, 2024

  • Sudhakar Muthusamy + 1 more

The Nutrition of a crop is very essential for the health conditions during its growth stages and yield. A plant development is dependent on various nutrients absorbed from the natural environment or fertilizer supplements. The shortage or lack of essential nutrients is one of the crucial factors which impacts the overall crop yield. Computer vision based phenomics have become an emerging area in agricultural research. In this part of research work, we propose a significant image classifier model which contributes as an Ensemble based Convolutional Neural Network(E-CNN) that can diagnose banana crop’s micro-nutrient deficiency with improved accuracy using the leaf images. We selected Six popular deep learning pre-trained models namely VGG-19, InceptionResNetV2, InceptionV3, Xception, DenseNet169 and DenseNet201 and performed the modification of parameters in the top dense layers to experiment with the public available mendeley dataset containing banana crop leaf images with nutrient deficiencies. The diagnostic accuracy along with precision, recall, F1 score and support score was observed. On comparing the classifying accuracy parameters of the six mutated pretrained models, the modified DenseNet169 model attains the highest testing accuracy. The performance analysis was also done using confusion matrices. Finally, we created three binary ensembled models such as Xception+InceptionV3, Dense169+Xception and InceptionV3+Dense169 based on their top performance accuracy scores for the detection of micro nutrient deficiency in banana crop using the concept of averaging strategy. The proposed mutated ensemble based model InceptionV3+Dense169 (IncepV3Dense) attains a validation accuracy of 98.62% and f1 score of 93% for detecting banana crop micro nutrient deficiency.

In the current study, the performance analysis of a solar chimney power plant expected to provide off-grid electric power demand for villages located in Iranian central regions is presented. High annual average of solar radiation and available desert lands in the central parts of Iran are factors to encourage the full development of a solar chimney power plant for the thermal and electrical production of energy for various uses. The interested is in Kerman where solar radiation is much better than other areas of Iran. The obtained results clear that solar chimney power plants having 244 m diameter can produce from 25.3 to 43.2 MW h of electricity power on a site like Kerman during different months of a year, according to an estimation calculated from the monthly average of sunning. This power production is sufficient for the needs of the isolated areas and can even used to feed the main electrical grid.

In view of the rapid development of the field of renewable energy, the development of a prototype wind power plant (WPP) is a necessary step to better understand the processes and optimize the operation of such plants. This research aims to create a functional prototype of a horizontal axis wind turbine that will serve as a basis for experimentation, performance analysis and development of improved technological solutions in the field of renewable energy. The work will study the interaction of a wind generator with atmospheric air flow, taking into account the design of the wind turbine blades. The study is based on a laboratory experiment and involves the use of an air flow concentrator. The experimental results provide an opportunity to visually study the influence of wind flow strength on the efficiency of a wind generator. Practical advice on designing and building a concentrator is offered. The findings from the study have the potential to significantly improve the technological aspects of renewable energy installations, highlighting their importance for sustainable development and improving energy efficiency.

The rising energy demand and the environmental challenges associated with improper waste disposal underscore the need for sustainable and renewable energy solutions. This project outlines the development of an improved 6 kW biomass gasification plant for syngas production. The syngas was deployed for power generation to provide reliable and sustainable electricity for a highly agro-rich settlement in the Okada environs which currently lacks access to the national electricity grid. The components of the gasification plant including the air supply channel, reactor, grate, the hopper etc were designed. Performance analysis was carried out using food waste pellet and wood waste as fuel to test the lower heating value and cold gas efficiencies of the produced syngas. Results showed that the lower heating values and cold gas efficiency using fuel wood were 4.3417 MJ/kg and 59.0316% respectively, while for food waste pellet were 5.5995 MJ/kg and 76.2463% respectively. A total cost of three hundred and fifty thousand naira was utilized in the fabrication of the gasification plant.

Feasibility of a Nuclear Reactor Dedicated to Desalination
  • Jul 7, 2014
  • Yong Hun Jung + 2 more

The development of a small-sized nuclear heat-only plant with maximized safety features dedicated to seawater thermal desalination was proposed to address both a serious water crisis and nuclear safety issues, which continue to be perennial problems. In this study, the feasibility of a dedicated nuclear heat-only desalination system for a target country was evaluated in comparison with a target nuclear thermal desalination system. First, the target country was selected, and its current energy and desalination status was investigated. The suitable nuclear desalination options for the target country were then selected. Finally, using corresponding analysis tools, performance and economic analyses were conducted for a dedicated nuclear heat-only desalination system and the target nuclear thermal desalination system. The results of the analyses indicate that operating the small-sized nuclear heat-only plant at low pressures coupled with a seawater thermal desalination plant will considerably improve both the safety and economy without a significant loss in desalination performance. In conclusion, the proposed dedicated nuclear heat-only desalination system is expected to have high potential for solving both problems.

Analysis of ROS Performance and FIT Gene Expression of rhd2 Mutant in Response to Fe Deficiency
  • Aug 31, 2024
  • The Philippine Journal of Crop Science
  • Philippine Journal Of Crop Science + 3 more

Iron (Fe) is one of the main micronutrients required for plant growth and development. Fe uptake signaling under Fe deficiency was determined to be involved in ROS. This study aimed to evaluate the changes in H2O2 content and ROS localization of the rhd2 mutant roots, the expression of the stress marker ZAT12 gene, and the central transcriptional factor regulating Fe uptake (FIT) in response to Fe deficiency. The results showed an increase of H2O2 content under Fe deficiency, but this increase did not involve the activity of NADPH oxidase encoding the RBOH C gene or by other RBOH genes. ROS was also localized in Fe-deficient roots compared to plants grown under Fe-sufficient conditions, except for the root tips. The root length grown under Fe-deficient conditions was shorter than under Fe-sufficient conditions. When treated with exogenous H2O2, the H2O2 content was increased, but ROS was reversely localized from root tips under Fe-deficient conditions. The level of FIT gene expression induced under Fe deficient condition increased in the rhd2 mutant compared to the Col-0 genotype. Reversely, the decreased level of ZAT12 gene expression was detected in the rhd2 mutant. So the expression of ZAT12 is mediated by ROS-generated NADPH oxidase encoded by RBOH C.
