Abstract

The entry of women as IT professionals in the fast growing software services sector is one of the noteworthy transformations observed in the labor markets in India. This change can largely be attributed to the growth of the IT-BPO industry, which is one of the largest recruiters of a qualified workforce in recent times. Information Technology sector has unveiled tremendous employment prospects for women in areas such as tele-communications, banking, shopping, education, health and business amiably befitting their job environment where the salary is attractive and the job is mostly desk type in nature. Women have now become an integral part of the workplace which has brought a drastic change in their position from a mere house keeper or child bearer into women as both bread winner and capable of handling household roles too. But this paradigm shift in the position of women from traditional homemaker to working professional has posed many challenges because these jobs are accompanied with hectic work schedule and target oriented leading to workplace stress. In the light of the increasing number of women in IT industry, there is a need to examine the phenomenon of the quality of life of Indian women IT professional in greater depth.
